Exploring the Cultural Sites of Sharjah

Sharjah is known to be one of the centres of culture in the United Arab Emirates. The fact that the city is named as the World Book Capital in 2019 by UNESCO, is a testament to that. Heritage Area

The Heritage area of Sharjah is located near Corniche between Burj Avenue & Al-Maraija Road. The area has a number of heritage buildings that have been recently rebuilt with traditional materials. You check out the following monuments:

  • Al Hisn Fort
  • Literature Square with House of Poetry
  • Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization
  • Sharjah Heritage Museum
  • Souq al-Arsa

You must not that most of the sites in the Heritage Area have opening times exclusively for women. Visitors of both genders should know about these before you visit the city.

Al Hisn Fort – The Fort is located on the Al-Hosn Avenue.  Also known as the Sharjah Fort Museum, it has been recently restored by the current ruler of Sharjah. The museum provides you with a glimple into the social history of the Emirate.

Timings: Saturday to Thursday – 8am to 2pm, Friday -closed.

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization – The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is an interesting place for any visitors with an interest in the Islamic faith and its history. You will find handwritten Qur’ans as well as letters from the Prophet Muhammad to other leaders and various artefacts from Mecca itself.  You would find an extensive display of Arab handicrafts.

Timings: Saturday to Thursday – 8am-8pm, Fri 4-8 pm only

Souq al-Arsah – The UAE is known for its Souks. This Souk is worth a visit. It is considered to be the oldest souk in the entire country. You can stop at the traditional coffee house for a mint tea and a plate of dates.

Timings: Saturday to Thursday- 9am-1pm and 4 -9 pm, Fri 4-9 pm only

Sharjah Calligraphy Museum – This is a small museum with a collection of amazing calligraphic works of art by Persian, Arabic and Turkish artists. It also has a workshop where students are trained in the art of calligraphy.

Timings: Saturday to Thursday – 8am-8pm, Fri 4-8 pm only

Art Area

This area includes places like the Art Museum which covers regional and international art exhibits, with the Oriental collection being its biggest draw. The Arts Area is situated opposite the Heritage Area on the other side of Burj Avenue.

Sharjah Art Museum – The Art Museum exhibits the very best in contemporary art by local and foreign artists.  It is also the home of the Sharjah International Art Biennale which is a biannual exhibition of international contemporary art and performance.

SharjahArcheology Museum – It is located on the Sheikh Rashid bin Saqr alQassimi Road. The museum explores the geological and the archaeological history from the Stone Age to the present day by exhibiting a range of artefacts, coins, jewellery, pottery and ancient weapons. It also give you an opportunity to investigate a dig in progress or explore models of burials, houses and tombs and see the first forms of writing in this area. .

Timings: Sat to Thu 9am-1am, 5-8pm, Fri 5-8pm, Sunday: Closed.
